Announcing Premium Health Sources

Perplexity started with a simple premise: answers should be accurate, well-sourced, and easy to verify. This is especially true in health, where the quality of the answer can shape what someone does next, from understanding a diagnosis to discussing treatment and medication with a doctor. More than one in ten queries on Perplexity are related to health, which makes access to trusted medical information especially important for our users.

Today we are launching Premium Health Sources. This continues our investment in premium sources and will allow Perplexity to draw from the same clinical references used by physicians and researchers.

What is a premium health source?

Premium Health Sources bring professional medical information that often sits behind institutional subscriptions and specialized tools directly into Perplexity. Instead of relying on generic symptom descriptions or vague summaries, people can draw on medical journals, drug databases, and clinical guidelines that offer a level of evidence and clinical detail that is often difficult to find through standard web search. This makes it easier to access more rigorous medical information directly in the answer.

Premium Health Sources serve two groups: people trying to understand a health question for themselves, and healthcare and biopharma teams that need more depth and stronger sourcing in their research.

How it works

When a health question calls for it, Perplexity can draw on premium sources directly in the answer. In Computer, premium health sources are triggered automatically for relevant questions, so there is no manual selection required. Every answer includes citations, so you can see exactly where the information came from. For example:

  • New England Journal of Medicine: “What does recent clinical evidence say about treatment options for atrial fibrillation?”

  • BMJ Best Practice: “What clinical reviews exist on Long Covid in young adults, and what do they say about prognosis beyond 2 years?”

Top-tier medical research

Premium Health Sources support different kinds of health research, whether you are trying to understand a diagnosis, check a medication, review clinical guidelines, or explore a more specialized topic.

At launch, Perplexity can draw from respected medical journals and clinical references that clinicians follow, including NEJM, BMJ Journals, and BMJ Best Practice. NEJM and BMJ Journals bring in peer-reviewed research and clinical studies that can help users go deeper on a condition or area of care.

BMJ Best Practice adds a different layer: it synthesizes medical literature and clinical recommendations into point-of-care guidance on what clinicians should consider doing next across conditions.

Additional sources will follow soon. These include Micromedex for medication information, EBSCOhost for broader medical literature and research databases, Health Affairs for health policy research, VisualDx for image-based clinical reference, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Diabetes Association for specialty recommendations, and Springer Publishing for medical education materials.

Health with care

This launch is part of our broader investment in health at Perplexity. As we continue building Perplexity Health and working with the Perplexity Health Advisory Board, our goal is to make high-quality information more transparent and easier to explore.
